Hadâmbu Monastery
Nestled in the picturesque village of Schitu Hadâmbului, just 30 km southwest of Iași, lies the enchanting Hadâmbu Monastery. This Romanian Orthodox monastery, built in 1659, boasts a rich history and a tranquil atmosphere that captivates visitors.
The story of Hadâmbu Monastery begins with a generous gift from Prince Gheorghe Ghica to the Greek boyar Iani Hadâmbu, a former cellar master. In 1659, the prince bestowed upon Hadâmbu a plot of land "in the forest of Iași, at Dealul Mare (the Big Hill)" to construct a church honoring the "Birth of the Most Honored and Birth-Giver of God." Hadâmbu, a close associate of the reign, possessed numerous estates and properties throughout Iași and Vaslui counties, including shops on the main street, house plots, stone cellars, and homes in the old lower market of Iași.
With this land, Boyar Iani Hadâmbu set out to renovate an ancient wooden church dating back to the 15th century, originally dedicated to "Saint Hierarch Nicholas." The result was the creation of the Hadâmbu Monastery, a fortified monastic complex that stands as a testament to the tumultuous times of the 17th century when Turks and Tatars frequently invaded and plundered monasteries. The church and its surrounding walls, built from sturdy quarry stone, resemble a fortress, offering protection and solace to those within its embrace.
